French Imperialism and the Struggles of Vietnam essays
French Imperialism and the Struggles of Vietnam articles Nguyen Thai Hoc attempted to battle against the dominion of the French, so he framed the Vietnamese Nationalist Party during the 1920s. Nguyen clarifies in his record, Letter to the French Chamber of Deputies, how everybody has the option to guard his own property, and on the off chance that the French are going to attempt to govern over his nation, at that point for what reason are Vietnamese treated in a totally extraordinary manner from the French residents? When taking a gander at the French archive entitled, National Assembly, Declaration of the Rights of Man And Of The Citizen one entry portrays the privileges of the French resident. The archives states, Men are brought into the world free and stay free and equivalent in rights. In what manner can a nation that has faith in these rights have the capacity to assume responsibility for Vietnam and treat these local individuals with no regard or care for their prosperity? Another fascinating record is Jules Ferry's Speech Before The National Assembly. Ship calls attention to how he feels that, Superior races have the rights over second rate races and that French Imperialism is a need that will profit France as well as Europe in general, as though that locale is the main that issues. Ship trusts France is doing nothing incorrectly by taking over different nations, controlling how they live and what kind of government they can and can't have. Nguyen feels the French are keeping down Vietnams possibility of developing all alone and that the French need to leave. The archive, by Phan Thanh Gian, entitled, Letter To Emperor Tu Duc And Last Message to his Administrators, shows how the French came to Vietnam during the 1830s and wound up remaining in Vietnam, sending an ever increasing number of troops to battle against the Vietnamese. They did this until they supported an adequate measure of authority over the nation. The French continued extending their ca pacity, and in the long run the Vietnamese needed to surrender their battle. It is extremely entrancing to peruse the thought... <!

Bed arrangements in dorms, and beauty on campus
Bed arrangements in dorms, and beauty on campus Correction from my previous entry: Im told that you can paint your room in Burton-Connor too, as long as you clear it with the house manager and paint it back at the end of the year. Just so my readers know, Im always happy to answer your questions. Ill demonstrate this by answering a couple. :) Nicole R. asked: Do most of the dorms have bunk beds or two seperate beds? I cant speak for every dorm, but at East Campus, most rooms, and virtually all non-frosh rooms, are singles, making this a non-issue. However, there are a few freshman doubles on every hall. In these, the beds are made to fit together, not built as a single entity. So you can choose whatever is more pleasing for you, bunk beds or two separate beds. Most people I know in doubles use bunk beds because it saves space. My friend in Senior Haus, Alex 07, lives in an enormous double with two separate beds. Ive seen bunk beds in Simmons but dont know if theyre universal. In some dorms, such as MacGregor, all the rooms are singles. But not all dorms are limited to singles and doubles. In Baker, there are singles, doubles, triples and quads. For a quad, I suppose, one could have four separate beds, or two sets of bunk beds, or a set of bunk beds and two separate beds, but I dont know what the norm is, or if there is a norm. Over in Matts blog, there was a question about why MIT is on the Princeton Review lists of Professors with Low Marks and Campus is Tiny, Unsightly, or Both. I thought Matt did a great job answering the one about professors. And, for that matter, a good job answering the campus one, but I had something to add to it: Most people will tell you that MIT has an ugly campus. And, in general, I tend to agree, in the sense that the campus is mostly the opposite of pretty. But it is an ugliness that I like. This article from 1999, which I think may be one of the most insightful articles ever written about MIT by an outsider (and look for the familiar name quoted in it!), talks about MIT being different from other universities, more like a government (or these days, government and corporate) research lab, the Los Alamos of the East. I think the ugliness is a reflection of that. I love walking alone through the basements of Main Campus buildings and looking around at the ugly, industrial scenery, listening to the hum from inside the labs and machine rooms, because I feel like theres something alive in the air. I like being barefoot and feeling the bumpy, waxed floors under my feet. MIT is a place of stone and pipes and concrete and machinery, and for me, the ugliness is almost mystical. Like its a special place, a never-ending lab holding many secrets, a place that the outside world knows about but doesnt know, doesnt relate to. Its my place. And while I think most of campus is the antithesis of pretty, I think theres a lot of beauty if you know where and how to find it. By beauty, I mean something that is not necessarily pretty but transcends prettiness somehow, something deeper than a scene where someone will look and say Oh, how pretty! or some equally inane comment. Take the picture in my banner, for example, which was taken by a friend of mine. Thats MIT. Thats MIT, seen in a way thats beautiful. Those of you who came to Campus Preview Weekend and met Jack Florey while you were there thats a chance, among other things, to see campus in a way that makes it beautiful. The gestalt effect of all the murals painted on a hall or floor, or of multicolored lights, in dorms that let you do that, is beautiful. Ive always believed that Killian Court is beautiful at night, especially seen from the right angles, whereas in the day I find it merely somewhat pretty. Except in a situation like this, which is a beautiful sight no matter what the time of day. ;)

Maximizing Your Eligibility for Need-Based Aid
Maximizing your eligibility for need-based aid You likely vowed to start planning for your son or daughterââ¬â¢s education back when he/she was only a baby. Your intention was to open up a 529 Plan and stash away a little extra cash each month until it matured into six-figures. With that money plus an athletic scholarshipââ¬âI mean, your kid was a peewee soccer MVP at the timeââ¬âyou would be sitting pretty by the time it came to pay that first tuition bill. Unfortunately, life got in the way of these best laid plans, and now youââ¬â¢re scrambling for practical short-term advice on how to finance the education of their dreams.Unless you happen to stumble uponà a 1985 Deloreanà fully-loaded with a flux capacitor (in which case you should pull a Biff, bet on future sports events, and not even worry about financial aid), youââ¬â¢re not going to be able to go back in time and execute that long-term savings plan. But that certainly doesnââ¬â¢t mean that all is lost. Space-time continuum transcending scenarios a side, here are some essential short-term strategies for maximizing your federal aid.1. Fill out the FAFSA! à For those with significant financial need, the federal government continues to be the largest source of student aid. Each year the government awards upwards of 70 billion dollars, money that comes in the form of Pell Grants, work-study programs, and educational tax breaks. Additionally, the feds loan out 110 billion with far more favorable terms than private lenders. Thatââ¬â¢s 180 billion dollars handed out each year for higher education, a sum greater than the Gross National Product of all but 60 countries in the world. The bottom line is that there is a substantial amount of federal money available for college and it is worth your time to at least fill out the FAFSA.This seems like obvious enough advice, yet each year over one million families fail to file a FAFSA solely because they do not believe that they would meet the income requirements for aid (hundreds of thou sands of others fail to fill out the FAFSA for other reasons). This includes many middle-class families who, due to the funky, almost nonsensical formula for awarding aid, may have actually received an award had they simply taken the time to complete the form.2. Understand how ââ¬Å"incomeâ⬠is calculated Under the new FAFSA process (instituted October, 2016), your income will be based upon your tax records from two years prior to the year your child sets foot on a university campus. If your teen will be entering college in 2017-18, your reported income will be for the calendar year 2015. While itââ¬â¢s too late to adjust already reported income, those with current high schoolers who are still two to three years away from the process can still take steps to minimize their taxable income for the calendar year upon which the calculation will be based.Certainly, it would not make any financial sense to go to extreme measures to reduce your income such as quitting your job or r efusing a raise. However, if you are due to receive a lump sum payment during that timeframe such as a company bonus or retirement/pension account withdrawal, you may want to look into deferring the receipt of that money until you are outside the aforementioned window of time.If your net income falls below the $50,000 mark, money that you have in the bank or a brokerage account will not be held against you. If youââ¬â¢re income is below the 40k mark, youââ¬â¢ll have a great chance to qualify for federal grant money regardless of your assets, liquid or otherwise.3. Move assets out of your childââ¬â¢s name and into your ownNow, weââ¬â¢re not advocating going all Macaulay Culkinââ¬â¢s dad on your kids and spending their summer job earnings on a bedroom Jacuzzi. This one actually comes down to simple math. Within the EFC formula, your assets are calculated at 5.65% while your childââ¬â¢s assets come in at a far heftier 20%. In other words, for every $1,000 in your son or daughterââ¬â¢s bank account, your EFC will increase by $200. If that same $1,000 was in your name your EFC would only increase by a little more than 50 bucks.4. Use savings to pay down debtNow that you have a better understanding of the EFC, you can imagine why it would be beneficial to take any money that you have in savings and use it to pay off credit card debts, auto loans, or even to prepay your mortgage. The world of financial aid punishes you for having large stacks of available cash and does not reward you for having a massive, high-interest credit card debt. Thus, paying off debt before submitting the FAFSA can kill two birds and greatly improve your chances of getting more aid. It may just be the most lucrative shifting of funds you can do not involving the Cayman Islands and a banker in sunglasses and a white suit.5. Be the earliest bird you can beFinally, we recommend submitting your FAFSA forms as soon as possible after October 1stââ¬âto maximize your eligibil ity for federal, state and institutional aidââ¬âso if you considering any of the above financial moves, move as quickly as possible. You may be 1.21 jigawatts short of turning back the future, but if you heed our short-term advice, there is still time to see if Uncle Sam can help cover the cost of your childââ¬â¢s college education.

Levallois Technique - Paleolithic Stone Tool Working
Levallois, or more precisely the Levallois prepared-core technique, is the name archaeologists have given to a distinctive style of flint knapping, which makes up part of the Middle Paleolithic Acheulean and Mousterian artifact assemblages. In his 1969 Paleolithic stone tool taxonomy (still widely used today), Grahame Clark defined Levallois as Mode 3, flake tools struck from prepared cores. Levallois technology is thought to have been an outgrowth of the Acheulean handaxe. The technique was reckoned a leap forward in stone technology and behavioral modernity: the production method is in stagesà and requires forethought and planning. The stone tool-making Levallois technique involves preparing a raw block of stone by striking pieces off the edges until it is shaped something like a turtle shell: flat on the bottom and humped on the top. That shape permits the knapper to control the results of using applied force: by striking the top edges of the prepared core, the knapper can pop off a series of similarly sized flattish, sharp stone flakes which can then be used as tools. The presence of the Levallois technique is commonly used to define the beginning of the Middle Paleolithic. Dating the Levallois The Levallois technique was traditionally thought to have been invented by archaic humans in Africa beginning about 300,000 years ago, and then moved into Europe and perfected during the Mousterian of 100,000 years ago. However, there are numerous sites in Europe and Asia which contain Levallois or proto-Levallois artifacts dated between Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 8 and 9 (~330,000-300,000 years bp), and a handful as early as MIS 11 or 12 (~400,000-430,000 bp): although most are controversial or not well-dated. The site of Nor Geghi in Armenia was the first firmly dated site found to contain a Levallois assemblage in MIS9e: Adler and colleagues argue that the presence of Levallois in Armenia and other places in conjunction with Acheulean biface technology suggest that the transition to Levallois technology occurred independently several times before becoming widespread. Levallois, they argue, was part of a logical progression from a lithic biface technology, rather than a replacement by movement of archaic humans out of Africa. Scholars today believe that the long, long range of time in which the technique is recognized in lithic assemblages masks a high degree of variability, including differences in surface preparation, orientation of flake removal, and adjustments for raw source material. A range of tools made on Levallois flakes are also recognized, including the Levallois point. Some Recent Levallois Studies Archaeologists believe the purpose was to produce a single preferential Levallois flake, a nearly circular flake mimicking the original contours of the core. Eren, Bradley, and Sampson (2011) conducted some experimental archaeology, attempting to achieve that implied goal. They discovered that to create a perfect Levallois flake requires a level of skill that can only be identified under very specific circumstances: single knapper, all pieces of the production process present and refitted. Sisk and Shea (2009) suggest that Levallois points ââ¬â stone projectile points formed on Levallois flakes ââ¬â might have been used as arrowheads. After fifty years or so, Clarks stone tool taxonomy has lost some of its usefulness: so much has been learned that the five-mode stage of technology is far too simple. Shea (2013) proposes a new taxonomy for stone tools with nine modes, based on variations and innovations not known when Clark published his seminal paper. In his intriguing paper, Shea defines Levallois as Mode F, bifacial hierarchical cores, which more specifically embraces the technological variations. This will beâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦So any shift in the supply or demand line can affect where the equilibrium is in the labor market. We can look at things that first could cause the supply line to increase which would make the line on the graph sway to the right. Some of the causes for this to increase is that wages go up, causing more people to want to enter the workforce, the population increases, or more homemakers want to enter the workforce. Things that could make the supply line decrease, making the line sway to the left are: emigration, wages go down, more people wanting to become homemakers, or a rise in people collecting welfare. When the demand costs of materials go up and productivity goes down, costs of labor goes down. We will now look into an organization and put all the things that have been discussed into perspective. The organization that has been chosen is Fantastic Samââ¬â¢s. This organization is a hair salon and would be consider perfect competition. The reason for this is because there are many hair salons that they can compete with for business. If they can keep prices lower than their competitors, then this will help them make more customers, and ultimately a higher profitability. Since the company pays employees on commission, the stylists that work for them will want to serve more customers during their shifts. More customers for the stylists means more money for the salon. Manifest Destiny, Slavery, and the Breakdown of the Union
Manifest Destiny is a phrase that expressed the belief that the United States had a divinely inspired mission to expand, spreading its form of democracy and freedom. The phrase Manifest Destiny was first used primarily by Jackson Democrats in the 1840s to promote the annexation of much of what is now the Western United States (the Oregon Territory, the Texas Annexation, and the Mexican Cession). Slavery, the exploitation of Africans for hard labor, was also growing vastly in popularity during this period of territorial expansion. These controversial ideologies, including such events as Mexican War, the Wilmont Provisio, the development of the Republican Party, the Dred Scott Decision, the Brooks-Sumner Incident, the Anthony Burnsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦While conservatives and many moderates were content merely to call for the restoration of the Missouri Compromise or a prohibition of slavery extension, the radicals insisted that no further political compromise with slavery was possible. In the following years, this anti-slavery party would gain many followers. By 1856 the Republicans had elected a Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives and placed a candidate in the election for president. In the Election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln would become inaugurated as a member of the Republican party, defeating John Breckinridge, Stephen Douglas, and John Bell of the Southern Democratic Party, Northern Democratic Party, and Constitutional Union respectively. Dred Scott was an American slave who was taken first to Illinois, a free state, and then to Minnesota, a free territory, for an extended period of time, and then back to the slave state of Missouri. After his original master died, he sued for his freedom. He initially won his freedom from a Missouri lower court, but the decision was reversed by the Missouri Supreme Court and remanded to the trial court. Simultaneously, Scott had filed suit in federal court, where, after prevailing on the issue of his status as a citizen of Missouri, he lost a trial by jury. Scott appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which used the case to fundamentally change the legal balance of power in favor of slaveholders. The Court ruled that: 1.
